Isolated Silk Road Caravanserai
Today you will have a beautiful, but also long travel day where you will really experience the history of the Silk Road. The remote border region of Kyrgyzstan is rugged, there are many mountain ridges and deep valleys. You get admiration for the people who live here. They herd their cattle, count it every day and don't leave it out of sight!
Your destination today is the old Caravanserai deep in the Tash Rabat valley, located at an altitude of 3200 meters and dating from the 15th century. The building has been beautifully restored. It is still not clear whether it was a Buddhist monastery or perhaps a Nestorian church. The caravanserai has a beautiful hall with several rooms around it. You will spend the night in a yurt camp in the vicinity of the caravanserai.
The next day you will travel further through the unspoiled landscape for which Kyrgyzstan is so famous. Along the way you will be amazed by even more high mountains, even more passes of 3000 meters. You will see shepherds with their horses, goats and sheep (and sometimes camels). In certain months of the year you can be offered 'kümüz' by the Kyrgyz. Of course, you're going to try a sip at least. It is fermented horse milk, for the Kyrgyz folk drink number one. They can even get drunk!
You will visit the Citadel Koshoi Korgon on the way to Naryn, from the 10-12 century. Preserved are the walls (5 meters high and 1000 meters long), in a square shape. Legend has it that the Kyrgyz hero Manas buried his friend Koshoi here. There is also a nice new museum. Arriving after a wonderful day of driving in Naryn, the most important city of the south, you will move into a 'homestay'.
