Horse Race on the Tibetan Plateau
It is not clear where the races will be held, deep on the Tibetan Plateau we drive in the early morning glory. Sometimes we pass a car, or we see people who have slept in a tent on the side of the road. It seems to be getting busier, more cars or mopeds are parked in the roadside. That would mean the race terrain can't be far.
Early in the morning, wisps of mist and cold hang in the air. Groups of horses from all directions reach the site, often they wear their thick chuba. In a corner of the site, sacrifices are made, a lot of incense is burned and lungta's are thrown. into the sky. Different horsemen are singing and they are proud, when they arrive by horse at the sacrificial site. Their spectators light fireworks. Then the races start, now there are many spectators, ladies are beautiful in their traditional dress. After a number of rounds there is a tribute, It is a special atmosphere to experience it. This is not a tourist festival, so I can appreciate the purity and rituals very much. Here's the wild west!
